The book’s meaning emerges through the reader’s reckoning of the relationships between the four varying objects of the stanzas. There’s a definite pattern to the text, stanzas that begin with analogies “if i was A, and you were B” or “if you were C, and i was D” “i’d call you E and you’d called me F” (Fogliano writes all in lowercase).
